Like a Stone 02:39
The day my father died He only had fifty dollars in the bank. He left us an old Ford car With a hole in the gas tank Mama had hope for the future But her hope chest sank Like a stone I was thirteen And the youngest was three. Mama had six hungry young Mouths to feed We were caught in the iron grip Of hard-assed paverty Hard as stone. My family held their heads high In the years gone past Now a kid at school Called my brother white trash. My brother told him to go f*ck off But he kicked my brother's ass All the way home. Man always thinks He's the master of his fate. He never sees the error of his ways Until it's too late. They were drinking champagne on the Titanic The day it hit ice And sank like a stone. <fade out>

Sweet Jane 02:23
Sweet Jane, Sweet Jane, Sweet Jane, Sweet Jane... I swear the breeze is calling your name. There's a place in the woods Where we made love. It was good. Yes it was... Your eyes were flashing like diamonds. It was just our luck That a group of boy scouts was passing by. We almost died from laughing When we saw the look in their eyes. Sweet Jane, Sweet Jane, Sweet Jane, Sweet Jane. I swear the breeze is calling your name.

Clementine 02:33
I once longed to be a preacher Almost married a cute young 5th grade teacher Even back when I was a kid in high school I was rarely seen without my bible But that was before your spell took hold of me. Won't you take me home Clementine I called you on the phone so many times. I feel so alone, don't you even care about me? I'm like an empty cup, Clementine Without you to fill me up, sweet love of mine. I need your love, like I need the air I breathe. I was raised by the Golden Rule Minded my manners, never once skipped school. Always went to church every Sunday, Rose early for work each and every Monday, But that was before your spell took hold of me. Repeat chorus: Won't you take me home Clementine I called you on the phone so many times. I feel so alone, don't you even care about me? I'm like an empty cup, Clementine Without you to fill me up, sweet love of mine. I need your love, like I need the air I breathe.

She's got a crooked smile upon her face and Her mousy hair won't stay in place Her mind is off in outer space, But she's alright with me. She makes the silliest funny faces She plays the clown in all the wrong places But the way she moves my heart just race She takes my breath away. Her skin's just like peaches and cream She's sweeter than a bowl of ice cream Pinch me I think I must be dreamin' She takes my breath away. We go walkin' in the moonlight Stretch out on the sand We listen to the waves go crashing on the shore I'm such a lucky man I'm such a lucky man Yes, I am.

Marsha's on amphetamines Little teenage drama queen She dreams of moving to Hollywood To star upon the silver screen. Pink pills, blue pills, orange, red That girl is totally out of her head. Jennie wants some cocaine. Richie's gonna try to score. It's just another weekend At the Jersey Shore. Mollie knows just what she wants. She ain't her mother's debutante. She dropped out of high school To work at a fast food restaurant. Pink pills, blue pills, orange, green It's enough to make her boyfriend scream. Lisa lounges at the pool She's tan and blond and oh so cool. She did a line in her boyfriend's car She felt just like a movie star Robert works at a gas station While his friends party all through summer vacation. His mother couldn't pay her bills She overdosed on sleeping pills. Julie's father owns a bank. Her boyfriend drives an army tank. His name is tatooed on her arm. She prays he won't come to any harm. It's just another weekend At the Jersey Shore

Here comes the weekend, it's Saturday night She's doin' up her hair making sure it's right. She puts on some makeup and some tight blue jeans She's looking like a southern beauty queen. He don't have to be handsome but he's gotta be true And bring home a paycheck...have a big smile too. John was a soldier, home from Iraq Some days he though he'd never make it back. He told the parish priest he shot three men If they weren't Iraqi's they might have been friends. He puts on some jeans and a big wide brimmed hat. He looks like a cowboy, but it's mostly an act To impress all the girls that he meets at the club Instead of a horse, he drives a big souped up truck. It's another Saturday night and the boy's goin' out on the town He's gonna meet his best friend, they'll pour a few cold ones down. Saturday night is the time for fun when Texas boys go lookin' for love... Lookin' for love. There's some lonely cowboys on Saturday night And there's some lonely cowgirls on Saturday night. She's gonna meet her girlfriends...spend a little money Drink some margaritas and act a little funny She may never find true love, but she'll have herself a real good time. There's some lonely cowgirls on Saturday night There's some lonely cowgirls on Saturday night.

When Tyler was 19 he decided to get married The baby was 3, Sue was 18, just barely. Sue found a job and put the baby in daycare. If Tyler held a job for a week, it was rare. It's just another day in Paradise, Texas Susan wakes up and fixes some breakfast. Ty washes up and puts his big hat on, Laces his boots up while Sue keeps the eggs warm. That big prairie wind just keeps on blowin The big 18 wheelers just keep on rollin' That river of blood just keeps on flowin' Tyler met this guy who worked nights at the local bar Tyler was impressed by his flashy new sports car. The man said "Hey Tyler, you can make easy money" "I can see you've got brains. No, I'm not being funny." Tyler cooked up speed late at night in the basement Blacked out the windows to keep all the light in. Late one night when the whole house was sleeping, A burner tipped over and the fire began creeping. That big prairie wind just keeps on blowin' The big 18 wheelers just keep on rollin' That big yellow corn will soon be growin' That river of blood just keeps on flowin' (They can't never wash that blood away). It's just another day in a jailhouse in Texas The door slams open and they shove in his breakfast. Tyler thinks of Sue and their beautiful child, Covers his head with a pillow and cries. fade out

Met her at a bar in San Francisco She was a young student at a college down by the bay. Love had kicked me in the head, almost left me for dead, But when she smiled at me I thought I might buy a ticket for the show Got myself a job at the college book store. The boss he was my friend, but I wish they had paid more. Laura waited tables at a Greek luncheonette She tried to make me quit my habit for French cigarettes. Pretty little Laura She's got the sweetest love and I want some more-a Sweet sweet little Laura She's the one I been looking for-a I was living with some students in a little old hotel The landlady was quite friendly. She knew some of the students a little too well. Sweet, sweet little Laura I'm like a kid in a candy store-a With little Laura There's gonna be a wedding once Laura graduates And I swear I'm gonna quit smoking for Laura and the baby's sake. I'm like a kid in a candy store-a with little Laura.

I don't trust a man in a suit and tie A man such as that builds his world upon lies Some of us struggle all the days of our lives While others just seem to coast on by I tried my hand at the college life But I didn't have a bit of luck My father was a hard working man He practically lived on that big old truck My mother stayed home with the TV blasting Her reality slipping away My sister shacked up with a butch lieutenant From the base outside of L.A. I don't trust a man in a $1,000 suit A man such as that will dance around truth The Good Book says there'll be a price to pay Their lies won't save them come Judgment Day.

Bobby was born on the wrong side of town He never smiles he's always wearing a frown. His hat is worn crooked upon his head When you look in his eyes you'll see the walking dead. He met sweet Lisa when she was 18 They worked late nights at the Burger Kiing They got to work two jobs just to make the rent Before the week is over their money is spent. The senator's son got kicked out of school He got caught buying smack at the town swimming pool There's a whole lot of trouble in my home town Our spirits have all been broken down. The mayor's brother he loves his new Jaguar car But he won't be able to drive much 'cause he'll soon be behind bars. There's even trouble in the preacher's home. His daughter's meth habit won't leave her alone. We've got no shortage of sinners, but come up short on the saints. Is this what we're here for? Is this our fate? The mayor's wife is hooked on diet pills, But his honor craves even bigger thrills. We've got no heat in the kitchen and rats in the basement. But the landlord still wants his payment. The baby's got the hiccups his sister is throwing up Sometimes my wife feels like giving up There's a whole lot of trouble in my home town Our spirits have all been broken down There's a whole lot of trouble in my home town.

New York 05:12
When Jeanie was 15 her family moved to Kansas Her brother was three, her dad sold eye glasses. That big prairie moon lit up the night sky Shining down on the corn so far from the noise and crime Of New York, New York, New York. When Jeanie first met Dan he was in one of her classes. He was tall and quite pale, he had long dark eyelashes. He was the only boy in school who payed her any attention. It was on their 3rd date that he first mentioned He thought he might be gay His sister was screwing the preacher His brother was molested By the new gym teacher. Dear Lord, he felt so lost. Jeanie missed the bright lights of New York City. She wished she was taller, and thinner, and pretty, But she was so bright and funny, and normally friendly, But it was hard for a city girl to fit in here out on the prairie So far, so far, from New York. The day Dan came out he said, Jeanie my friend, I hate who I am, but I can no longer pretend. Jean said, Dan I still love you. Just stay the way you are. Be true to yourself and you'll shine like a star. That big prairie moon lit up the night sky Shining on the corn so far from the noise and crime Of New York, New York, New York. Some boys got hold of Dan after one of his classes. They threw him to the ground and broke his eye glasses. They said, live by God's word, friend. We don't like fags here. You better turn your life around Or you better just disappear To a place like Zoo York, Jew York, New York. Dan said, I swear one day, Jean, we'll get out of Kansas Find a place somewhere where people will accept us. A place like New York, New York, New York. Dan said, the stars up in the sky, they never end Jean This little planet earth is like a grain of sand, dear Lord I feel so lost.

Another Shot 03:38
I wish that I Had a dollar for Every time I saw my father pour Another shot Of cheap whiskey One more shot My mother cries Every time she thinks About how much We saw my father drink One more shot Of cheap whiskey Another shot "Sweet whiskey won't you take away my pain!" We heard my father sing. My mother always wanted a better life for all of us children She always kept a smile upon her face She baked pies for pop's restaurant every day. Now she works all night in a dirty cold factory Packin' fish 'til seven, gets home after eight She packs fish all night, gets home at eight. My father used to own a little restaurant Where all the locals stopped to have their lunch One day a big McDonalds moved into town Six months later pop had to shut the restaurant down. My mother used to make us breakfast Bacon and eggs on the plate Now she works the overnight Packs fish til seven, gets home at eight. Last night she was so tired she forgot to say grace.
